The programme builds on existing skills, knowledge and experience. Throughout the course you will look to develop existing leadership and personal skills in kayaking, canoeing, mountaineering, high ropes, hill walking, team-building, orienteering, and rock climbing. Facilitation skills and teaching methods will be developed using external client groups through our Kirkley Hall Outdoor Activity Centre. This year there will be an emphasis on instructing, leadership and coaching. There are options to gain a range of national governing body awards (for those who have the necessary pre-requisites).

You need a Level 2 qualification related to the outdoor industry, e.g. year 1 programme or appropriate experience of working within the outdoor industry (which includes instructing groups) and have 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (maths & English included).

The course offers an excellent foundation and springboard for those wishing to work in the outdoor industry and many of our students move straight into employment on completion of the second year programme. Employment options, opportunities and applications are looked at as part of the program. Alternatively, the level 3 qualification (which holds UCAS points) could be used to progress to a qualification in Higher Education, e.g. a foundation degree in outdoor education or sport science.
