Northumbria Police, in partnership with Northumberland College, are once again giving the public a glimpse into rural crime fighting.
The event on Sunday 19 June, which is being held at Northumberland College’s Kirkley Hall Campus near Ponteland, marks the second annual Rural Policing Open Day.
Last year, hundreds of people turned up to support the family friendly event at Kirkley Hall in the stunning Northumberland countryside, and this year organisers are hoping to welcome even more police and agriculture enthusiasts.
Officers have teamed up with a host of rural partners including the RSPCA, Northumberland Mountain Rescue, Northumberland National Park and Forestry England to offer visitors a day of learning and fun.
Members of the public are encouraged to come along from 10am until 3pm to meet local crime fighters and learn how they keep communities safe.
Visitors will also be able to sit behind the wheel of a police car and learn its inner workings, take photos with some of the specialist equipment used by rural officers in their day-to-day work and witness an exciting live demonstration from Mountain Rescuers.
Northumbria Police Rural Crime Volunteers will also be in attendance to inform people how they can volunteer with officers and be an ambassador for their community.
Families and children can make use of the open spaces at Kirkley Hall, which boasts some excellent learning facilities – from a working farm, dedicated agriculture and arboriculture workshops, a zoo with over 200 species of animals, a bespoke equestrian centre and vast land and gardens.
Rural Policing Superintendent Andy Huddleston said:
“We’re really excited to once again welcome families, the farming community and future officers to our second annual Rural Crime Open Day at Kirkley Hall. Last year’s event was a roaring success with over 1000 people turning out and we are so thankful to Northumberland College for opening their amazing venue to the public for this event once more.
“We would love to welcome even more people this year, this open day really is a perfect opportunity for the community and families to learn about the how we police our vast rural countryside and learn about the partners we work alongside to keep everyone safe and our beautiful Northumberland area thriving. Come rain or shine, this is set to be a great family event – and we would love to meet you all!”
He added: “Northumbria Police are also currently undergoing our biggest ever officer recruitment drive. If you’re passionate about pursuing a career in policing and would like to find out more, please come along and talk to our officers.”
Lee Lister, Vice Principal (Quality and Curriculum) at Northumberland College, said:
“We’re delighted to be hosting the annual Rural Policing Open Day for the second time at our Kirkley Hall Campus with our inspiring state-of-the art facilities. We’re proud of our strong links with Northumbria Police and the local communities that we serve and look forward to welcoming them on Sunday. The synergy of the work the police carry out in this space has direct synergy to the curriculum we deliver and how we prepare our students for careers in the rural sector.”
The event is family friendly and free to attend. Access to the zoo will be free on the day too. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in most outdoor areas.
