Level 3 Sport students recently took part in an induction event at St. James’ Park, led by Commonwealth Games Gold medal-winning gymnast, Craig Heap. The theory-based day was designed to give young people an understanding of what makes a good volunteer, leader or coach for the volunteering placements they will do with the scheme.
Organised by Northumberland Sport, the Northumberland Young Volunteer Pathway is primarily funded by Sport England and Northumberland County Council in partnership with the Youth Sports Trust’s Young Coach Academy and Step into Sport programmes.
Danielle Thompson, Sports Lecturer, said: “This scheme was provided to us on the back of volunteering our sports students have previously participated in. The Northumberland Young Volunteer Pathway will play an important role for their main programme requirements, providing learners with the opportunity to improve their coaching, leadership and employability skills. It also gives them fantastic opportunities to work with highly recognised sporting organisations.”
Following this event, students will also attend a practical based training day at Sports Central, Northumbria University to prepare them to volunteer at the Northumberland Para Games and the Northumberland School Games County Festival. This day will focus on developing coaching, officiating and leadership skills through practical based workshops and coaching, giving our students the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned and be part of the School Games workforce.
