Northumberland College construction apprentices have been putting their skills into practice by transforming an area of wasteland into a new paved footpath.
The students dug out a patch of grass and mud at the college’s Ashington Campus, bringing what they have learned in the workshop into a live project.
Gaining confidence and experience in path laying, the apprentices hope to take on a greater role in Northumberland College’s multi-million-pound development at Ashington and Kirkley Hall when face-to-face training resumes in the coming months.
Alan Gregory, Highways Skills Coach, said:
“The outcome was to get our apprentices from being in the workshop each week creating work and then taking it down to actually digging out a piece of unloved grass and mud and making a permanent path.
“We would gladly undertake any road or path work at the Ashington and Kirkley Hall campuses in the future as I see this as a great opportunity for the apprentices to undertake live work.”
Education Partnership North East Vice Principal of Partnerships and Commercial, Iain Nixon, added: “Fantastic work by our Highways apprentices, turning an area of Ashington Campus into a block paved footpath. Thank you.”
