Secondary school pupils from across the North East have been given a unique insight into possible future careers at Northumberland College.

More than 30 Year 9 and 10 pupils visited the college’s campuses at Ashington and Kirkley Hall for two days of practical taster sessions in brickwork, joinery, plastering, countryside management, agriculture and animal care.

The college’s ‘Specialist Discovery Days’ offered young people from Duchess School (Alnwick), Boldon Colliery School (South Tyneside), Hillcrest School (Cramlington) and Dukes High School (Ashington) the opportunity to understand the career choices available to them.

Nathan Yearham, 14, from Dukes High School, said: “I’ve really enjoyed the Construction Day at Ashington Campus. It really helped me plan for the future.”

Danielle Towers, Head of Sixth Form at Dukes Secondary School, added: “The specialist facility coupled with the highly skilled staff are fantastic and the pupils had such an exciting day.”

Northumberland College is the largest further education provider in Northumberland with campuses throughout the county.

Phase one of an extensive multi-million-pound re-development programme is well underway which will see the creation of an advanced, state-of-the-art digital academy and a new health simulation ward at the college’s Ashington campus.

Kirkley Hall will become a centre of excellence for equine education with the construction of a new education hub to accommodate the delivery of skills such as farriery, animal dentistry and physiotherapy, plus renovations to existing equine facilities.

Animal management students will benefit from a renovation project within the on-site zoo to enhance all teaching spaces, animal enclosures and science labs.
