Northumberland College GCSE English and Functional Skills students have been showing off their skills through a national creative writing competition.

The students were tasked with penning their own thrilling mini saga, told in just 100 words around the theme of ‘Trapped: Stories of Jeopardy’ with the chance of publication up for grabs. They were free to interpret the topic as they wished, using time periods or narrative techniques of their choice.

Stories written by Ethan Lawson (Poaching), Owen Elliott (Trapped: The Man), Annabel Corke (Buried Alive) and Ellie Lawrence (Trapped) were selected by judges to feature in the latest Young Writers book.

Laura Davison, GCSE English tutor at Ashington Campus, said: “I was thrilled to hear that some of our learners’ work had been chosen for publication.

“Our learners have been making great progress with their creative writing skills, so this is a fantastic achievement and recognition of their progress.”
