Northumbria Police recently visited Northumberland College to raise awareness of knife crime and the devastating harm it causes.
Officers from the force’s Engagement Team delivered a series of workshops to over 150 students and staff at Kirkley Hall Campus offering advice, ideas and resources to reduce the danger posed to young people, education environments and the wider community.
The sessions were part of Operation Sceptre – a week long initiative involving all 44 forces in England and Wales in a combined effort to clampdown on knife crime.
Animal Care Lecturer, Jessica Highmoor, said: “We would like to thank Northumbria Police for coming in to talk to our students and staff about the dangers of knife crime. They all enjoyed the sessions and found them very useful.”
Students heard the facts and consequences, why police use stop and search powers and why carrying a knife makes you more at risk of becoming a victim. The officers also talked through the different ways they can report knife crime safely and anonymously.
Student Kyle Malone, added: “I really enjoyed the knife crime workshop. It really opened my eyes as to how serious things could be and gave me a lot to think about.”
PC Nicola Bone, who delivered the workshops, said: “Thank you to Northumberland College for being so accommodating. The students were great and we hope they all benefitted from the sessions.”
In September, Northumberland College agreed a unique partnership with Northumbria Police to increase students’ awareness of personal safety and encourage good community relations.
The three-year strategic partnership, which has seen a dedicated Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) located at Ashington and Kirkley Hall campuses, aims to create a safer environment within the college and its surrounding areas.
The PCSO is an integral part of the Student Services team and supports with student-led community improvement projects as well as offering advice and guidance on ways students and staff can keep themselves safe.
