Students volunteer at Kielder Marathon

Employees and students at Northumberland College volunteered at this year’s Kielder Marathon ensuring the event was a huge success.

Three members of staff and 20 Level 2 and Level 3 Sport and Public Service students volunteered 12 hours of their time, working alongside staff from Events of the North to ensure the race ran smoothly.

The students represented themselves and the college brilliantly, playing a vital role at Transition 1 in Kielder Village and Transition 2, on the approach to Bull Crag Peninsula. The Events of the North staff highly praised the attitude and work rate of the college’s students, commending their excellent leadership, teamwork and communications skills throughout.

Rebecca Partner of Events of the North, said: “The students were brilliant. The event could not run without the excellent work and participation from the students. Thank you to each and every one of them for volunteering their time.”

The Active Northumberland Kielder Marathon route follows an almost entirely off-road course around northern Europe’s largest man-made lake, Kielder Water, in Northumberland.

Britain’s Most Beautiful Marathon is the finale to a weekend of events, starting with the Kielder 10K & Kielder Run Bike Run and followed by the Kielder Half Marathon and Junior races. It all adds up to an electric atmosphere and a fabulous weekend in a beautiful part of the country.

This is the sixth year the Sport and Public Service students have volunteered for the event, with plans to volunteer again next year.

George Bramley, Sport Lecturer, said: “Our students represented themselves and the college with distinction. I am extremely proud of them for their dedication and commitment which contributed to ensuring the event was a huge success.”
